An Athletic Primer on OTC's, Supplements, and Herbals
The recent high-profile emergence of herbals, supplements, and OTC products in the sports arena means that athletes and coaches have to stay well-informed and current, sorting out the facts from the myths. Although these products may appear similar, they're not equivalent in any way: what makes them different makes ALL the difference. This session will provide an overview of issues related to health, liability, safety and legality, especially in regard to school athletic programs. Also included: the 1994 Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, regulatory concerns, labeling requirements, limitations on product claims, unintended effects, interactions, potential for abuse, and concerns about self-dosage.
Keyword(s): athletics/sports, legal issues, safety/injury prevention
