Navigating the Sexist Seas of Sports Media: Success and the "Single" Female
In the age of "GRRL Power", the Victorian belief that women should be seen but not heard, and seen only under certain prescribed conditions, appears to be almost completely eradicated from American culture in general and Americna sport culture in particular. To some degree, the all male domain of sports media evidences the shifting gender order occurring throughout sport. However, there remains more than a mere vestige of the belief that women should be seen and not heard in sports media. Some portion of this presentation is based on interviews with ten college age women currently learning their craft at the undergraduate level and ten women who are working in the profession.
