Gender Interactions Between Teachers and Students in High School Physical Education
The literature provides descriptions of various ways in which gender bias has occurred in education – it seems to exist in all types of classes, at all levels of instruction, and with both genders of teachers. Recent research has shown many benefits for using gender equity principles in providing positive learning experiences for both girls and boys. Session participants will gain greater insights into: teacher-student and student-student gender interactions in activity classes, awareness of biased language, attitudes toward motor skill performance according to gender, how the secondary school curriculum perpetuates gender bias, how teaching styles and strategies are affected by gender, and how coed classes are organized to encourage or discourage gender equity.
