Images of Gender and Disability in Sports Illustrated for Kids |
This session will review a series of collaborative studies that examined photographic images in Sports Illustrated for Kids (SIK). The studies looked at the number and types of images of gender and disability presented in SIK over a three-year period from July 1996 (just before the 1996 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Atlanta, GA) to June, 1999. The objective of the studies was to assess how the magazine presented gender and disability to its young, impressionable readers. These images could be significant in the formation of children's attitudes toward gender and disability. |
