AAALF/Aquatic Council
Pool and Spa Health & Safety Issues
1) Aquatic activities, along with modern air and water handling technology have revealed respiratory problems related to evaporation and aerial spray devices. Aquatic facility managers and pool operators attending this session will be made aware of the causes and prevention of various respiratory conditions as well as various water-borne and air-borne diseases/conditions associated with the aquatic environment.2) Breath holding may seem to be a benign activity. It is used in swim lessons, swim team training, snorkeling, skin diving, and underwater games. New competitive breath holding activities, know as free diving, involve prolonged submersion with emphasis on distance, depth or time. These activities pose significant risk for the participant and the facility. This presentation will focus on the statistics, medical research, growth, actual case histories and risk management of underwater breath-holding in pools.
