Safe to be LGBT: Addressing Heterosexism & Homophobia in HPERD |
First, professionals who have been instrumental in combating homophobia in (AA)HPERD will address the history, nature and importance of the struggle. The avenues we have taken have been serious and sometimes comical as we have tried to stay safe and sane as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered professionals. Then, participants will consider scholarly directions that can advance knowledge and professional practice at the interface of HPERD and the lives of LGBT people. Finally participants will examine strategies to create safe environments for teaching, learning , and professional practice. Without emotional safety, there is little chance for successful practice or learning. |
