Preventing Eating Disorders: Influences Within Schools/ What Educators Can Do
Body dissatisfaction and unhealthy dieting and exercise behaviors are on the increase among children and youth. Although the majority of children and youth will not develop clinical eating disorders, it is clear that excessive anxiety about body image and unhealthy dieting and exercise practices can interfere with their developmental needs and resiliency. This interactive session will provide HPERD personnel with background information and effective ideas for implementing eating disorder prevention education activities/programs for children. This session will also address the multifaceted nature of eating disorders among middle school children and discuss specific coping strategies for pre-teen girls and school staff. Participants will receive a comprehensive information packet on eating disorders recently developed by the Office of Women’s Health Eating Disorders Initiative.
