The Art and Wisdom of Mentoring: Leaving the Best Legacy
Data from a study of senior faculty are the basis for illustrating the enigmatic yet powerful influence of mentors on their students/young professionals. Some of the concepts presented include identifying effective methods of mentoring, the nuance of mentoring – those being mentored/those doing the mentoring, the undefined point in a career when/if one transitions from one to the other. For many this transition is accompanied by a profound sense of responsibility. It is only when the midcareer professional starts to accumulate a list of ‘respected former students’ does s/he realize the best legacy one can leave – are the young professionals who will become the next generation of responsible and contributing health educators.
