Enhancing Health Literacy Through Service Learning: University-Community Partnerships
Reach Out and Read (ROAR), a health and literacy program, brings together preservice teachers from early childhood education and health education to read to young children in pediatric clinics. Miami University and Cleveland State University are the first two institutions in the country to involve future teachers in this national project, which began at Boston City Hospital in 1989. Collaborative partnerships between universities, libraries, clinics and community service agencies make the ROAR program a significant health and education initiative for children, parents, and caregivers. An intraprofessional panel will discuss ROAR as an academic service learning project which promotes health literacy.
