The Varieties of Environmentalism: An Overview for Outdoor Educators |
Professionals in the fields of outdoor and adventure education often try to promote positive environmental attitudes and behaviors through their programs. Part of the difficulty in this task lies in defining what “positive” means in the complicated area of environmental thought. While environmentalism is often thought of as a single social movement, in reality the term refers to a broad variety of movements, philosophies, political ideologies, and even religious thought. This presentation will examine the history, evolution, and impact of environmental philosophy and advocacy with the goal of better informing educators about the complexity of the subject. |
