Intuitive Eating: A Cross-Cultural Comparison with Professional Recommendations
One premise of the intuitive eating paradigm is that “naturally thin” people eat in response to physical hunger, while those who are overweight may be eating for emotional or situational reasons. This presentation reports on findings of a cross-cultural survey that analyzed motivations for eating among Japanese and American female college students. Similarities and differences between the two cultures will be discussed, and implications for traditional weight control programs (that focus on exercise and diet composition) will be presented. Professional recommendations will be offered in relation to the potential value of intuitive eating as a means for achieving healthy weight .
