NDA Scholar/Lecture--Seeking Illumination: The Practice of Combining Dance Research & Choreography |
For Beal, dance education scholarship has been a process of creative efforts that combines research activities & choreography. Developing teaching & choreographic skills were her first priority as a young professional. However, extended experience & the observation of dance injuries lead her to research in electromyographical study of the plie and later, how movement activities can be physically & emotionally beneficial to older adults. More recently she has focused her research on dance assessment. Each diverse area has led to the goal of informed practice in dance education.
In order to achieve this blending of research & choreography, collaboration has been a necessity --
sharing ideas with colleagues, students, musicians & artists inside & outside the university system. Through teaching, choreography & research, the creative, artistic & collaborative processes illuminate her practice. |
